Our Members’ 2022 Wrap-Up

Thank you for your support over the past year – it is only through the combined strength and expertise of our creative, connected and forward-thinking members that we can shape the future of the Creative Industries. 

In the past year, with your support, we have achieved great things. 

 

We Advocated for the Creative Industries 

In a year of great change, we penned an open letter to Prime Minsters Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, setting out the sector’s economic priorities and providing recommendations ahead of the emergency budget and autumn statement 

We worked with the Labour Party’s Business Engagement team to help launch Labour Creatives – a new network which creates opportunities for creatives to influence the shape of Labour’s policies on the Creative Industries. 

We advocate for our members’ priorities in regular meetings with ministers and government departments. For example, in September, our CEO, Caroline Norbury OBE gave evidence to the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee on the future of the Creative Industries, extolling the importance of the sector speaking with one voice and viewing arts funding as an investment, rather than a cost. 

We championed creative education by convening senior political advisors at the Department for Education, together with our members, to discuss priority concerns. We responded to the HE reform consultation announcement and our submitted response stressed the importance of protecting our creative talent pipeline at all levels; advising against additional barriers for creative students and education providers via the potential introduction of student number controls and minimum eligibility requirements. 

Representing the views of our members, we responded to matters affecting the Creative Industries, including the Levelling Up White Paper and Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation funding announcement. We fed into discussions on energy and cost of living, including a briefing with the BEIS Permanent Secretary on the Government’s Business Energy Support Scheme. 

Our policy paper, Creativity Without Limits, was developed with input from our members and outlines recommendations to unlock the sector’s post-Brexit potential. 

 

We Promoted a Fairer Creative Industries 

Working with DCMS, we have convened a series of industry roundtables addressing Bullying and Harassment  and we are supporting the development of training and best-practice resources for the Creative Industries, as well as establishing an Independent Standards Authority with Times Up UK. 

We launched the UK’s largest freelance survey. Working closely with members, partners and nine Combined Authorities, the project Redesigning Freelancing set out our vision for freelancing and aims to design an industry-led Freelance Framework containing resources to support freelancers and organisations to find practical information and implement best practice. In partnership with the Greater London Authority, we co-led a full-day event to gather insights on issues faced by creative freelancers to inform our future activity.  

 

We Connected Members 

Creative Coalition Festival brought together over 200 speakers in 64 free to access events, over 3 days, and members had the opportunity to engage with Rt Hon Keir Starmer MP, Leader of the Opposition, and Julia Lopez MP, Minister of State. Next year, Creative Coalition Festival returns (28 Feb – in-person opening gala, and 1-3 Mar virtual festival) – we invite you to join us and to claim your discounted ticket for the gala with the promo code: MEMBER25. 

We hosted three Regional Receptions in London (National Theatre), North East (The Common Room) and East Midlands (Derby QUAD), with speakers and performers including: The Rt Hon Nadine Dorries MP – Secretary of State for DCMS, Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, Mayor Jamie Driscoll – North of Tyne Combined Authority, and soul-singer, Tawiah; and sponsors including Youtube, British Business Bank, British Esports Association, Crystallised and Marketing Derby. 

We brought hundreds of members together through 13 network meetings. Responding to our member’s needs, we formed new networks: Diversity and Inclusion and Changemakers, and relaunched our Creative Skills and Futures Network. 

We delivered two international delegations hosted by UNBOXED and the British Council. Bringing together representatives from 19 countries, the delegations showcased UK talent and created open dialogue with other creative nations across the world. 

 

We Supported Talent 

We relaunched our student membership, providing content, events, and opportunities for our Federation member students. In the past year, we engaged with over 1,500 students and offered 22 students the paid opportunity to write original content for us. 

We supported and invested in over 600 creative businesses and freelancers across the UK, helping the Creative Industries emerge from the pandemic with resilience, innovation, and purpose. 

We are delighted to be growing our activity in three regions – the North East, South West and South East – as part of a new DCMS £17.5 million funding pot, The Creative Growth Programme, to support creative businesses with high growth potential to expand their operations, attract additional investment and create jobs.
